What I do
Helping people with Dharma study is something I do as my livelihood which means I rely on people's generosity to carry on doing this work on a full-time basis. I don't have fixed charges and I work on a dana basis, which means people choose what they are happy and willing to give me according to their circumstances. Most people set up standing orders for whatever amount they'd like to support me with.
People generally have fortnightly sessions with me. For two sessions a person could make a monthly standing order in the range £40 to £80, which some people have done. But don't worry if you can't afford that much - I work on a dana basis, that is I let people decide how much they contribute to support my work. These amounts give you an idea of what people give. Because some people are in good circumstances they give a bit extra and that enables others to give less. This works well as the people I work with range from those with well-paid professional jobs to people who are retired or on invalidity support.
Conversation online on Skype is the way I usually meet with people. Occasionally people have contact by phone. The quality I get from studying with somebody over Skype is quite good. I find I am able to sense the person in front of me almost as though it's like being with them in the room. In the course of study people get the chance to apply the topic to their own life and particular circumstances. We often take questions as starting points for discussion and there's a natural opportunity to test reflection on the theme over against lived experience.
